In Seattle where homes range from the late 1800s upward, clients are often looking for home renovations with a design nod towards the home’s original aesthetics. From 1920s charm to MCM magic, Schulte Design Build works with the home’s period – while also creating a space that is high-end and functional.
Seattle’s Historic Homes
Seattle’s architectural landscape throughout the decades can be found in different neighborhoods scattered around the city. If you’re in Queen Anne, you’ll find many Victorian homes (late 1800s to early 1900s), While the Craftsman style (1900s-1930s) are often found in Wallingford or Capitol Hill. Mid-Century Modern houses (40s-60s) are scattered in Magnolia or the Eastside.
These homes, with their distinctive character, deserve more than a cookie-cutter approach. They require a thoughtful eye that respects the historical roots but also opens up the space for better flow, functionality, and modern touches.
How Do You Blend History with Modern Design?
Like every house with a history, every client tells a story about what their specific needs are. We take a white-glove approach for every client, and ensure we listen to what they’re looking for on a practical level, while also tying in their dreams for their kitchen, bathroom, or other living space.
“One of the things I like about working with homeowners is meeting people that will be using the space on a daily basis. These are the people that are directly impacted, invested, and the most excited about the project.” – Dan Corcoran, Residential Designer of DEC who has worked with Schulte for over twenty years.
A good example is an ADA compliant bathroom we did for our clients in North Seattle. They live in a 1963 home and wanted a bathroom that shows clear MCM design while still having all of the features necessary for their son to use the space seamlessly. MCM style includes a lot of natural elements, a warm color palate, and 1960s lines from the era. However, adding modern features like a Toto toilet, wheelchair accessible sink, widened doorways, and custom shower features is essential in making a space comfortable and not just a design for show.
